In this post I want to talk about why, contrary to popular belief, I think prime lenses are great for beginner photographers, and how using them can help develop strong habits for better composition and photographs. Zooms lenses (lenses that provide a range of focal lengths) are extremely popular nowadays. Prime lenses (ie. no zoom, just one fixed length) though are renown for producing very high quality photographs, but are not as flexible - they pretty much follow the philosophy of doing one thing, but doing it well.

Outdoor portraits are very difficult for a lot of photographers. Many times, the bright sun, which one might initially think would provide plenty of great light, ends up casting dark shadows on subjects’ faces. The result is a contrasty photo with faces enveloped in shadow and backgrounds overexposed.
How do you get great outdoor portraits where the subject is well exposed with a nice blue sky in the background and the faces are bright and clear?
